what size group should I book?
This decision can be a little complicated, and a little subjective too.
You need to consider the size and acoustic quality of the space, the
number of guests, your
budget, and how you envision your event. If you would like help
determining what size group to book, please contact
Rachel. Please read on for details about the different size
groups.
ALL RECORDINGS ON THIS WEBSITE ARE OF CORTLAND MUSIC MUSICIANS.
1
Solo
Cello is one musician
(cellist). Solo cello is best suited to a smaller, more intimate gathering, but will also work
for an event like a medium-sized wedding ceremony in a space with great acoustics, like
the chapel at the Atlantic School of Theology, or a casemate on Citadel
Hill. Solo cello repertoire is mostly Baroque music (like J.S. Bach and
Handel), with
some Classical and Romantic selections, and special requests.

The Cortland Duo consists of two
musicians
A duo is suited to a smaller, more intimate gathering, right up to a
medium-sized wedding ceremony in a space with good acoustics. Our duo
music (Duo Repertoire) includes most of our Quartet Repertoire, plus many pieces written
specifically for duo.

3
The Cortland Trio consists of three
musicians
Versatile like the quartet, the trio is suited to intimate
gatherings, through to medium sized weddings, and everything in between.
The trio is not a good choice for a room full of music aficionados, as the
four-part harmony will be missing. Otherwise, you’re safe, as an
untrained ear will not notice.

The Cortland Quartet consists of four
musicians
A quartet
is very versatile, and is suited to intimate gatherings, large wedding
ceremonies in a church or other acoustic space, and everything in between.
It is harmonically ideal to have all four
parts (just like a choir has soprano, alto, tenor, and bass). The standard,
classical string quartet is very popular, but the
clear upper register, and shiney silver finish of the flute, makes a flute
quartet a distinguished novelty.

The Cortland Octet consists of eight
musicians
Magnificent
extravagance! Often referred to as a
double quartet, an octet would be best suited to a grand event, like a
large corporate function in the Grand Ballroom at the World Trade and
Convention Centre, or a large wedding in a hotel, or outdoor venue.
It would only be a small exaggeration to
inform your guests there will be a chamber orchestra to entertain them!

Octet Repertoire is identical to Quartet
Repertoire.
group + soloist
like a soprano can be very appropriate for a special event where having a
song is desired. Instrumental soloists like trumpet, oboe or clarinet can
also add a special touch if you, or a special
guest at the event, is a fan of a particular instrument. Please contact
us to see if your favourite instrument is
available. See the bottom of the fees
page for more information.
